 Scrooge/ Grinch
These are terms that we use for people who just don’t really want anything to do with Christmas. Basically, they are the opposite of me. They don’t want to listen to Christmas music, or watch the movies. They hate going Christmas shopping. They see the holiday as more of an inconvenience than a joyous occasion. Why do we call these people a Grinch? Or a Scrooge? These are both names of characters in popular Christmas films. Both the Grinch and Mr. Scrooge hate Christmas. They want nothing to do with it. Both characters are angry, mean and dark.

So when I want to put on my ugly Christmas sweater, drink hot cocoa and watch Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and Cameron doing his best 撒娇, I can tell him, “Stop being a Grinch and get in the spirit of Christmas!” Just kidding. Cam doesn’t

Cam

You can use this term during Chinese New Year. Let’s say a friend doesn’t want to eat any of the tasty food you prepared, you can say, “Quit being a Scrooge and eat dumplings with me!”.

This the Season
In America, we talk a lot about the “holiday season”. The holiday season occurs around the time of Thanksgiving until Christmas. It’s about a month long duration. During this time, a lot of westerners experience the same things; big family get-togethers, eat a lot of food, the joys of holiday traffic on the road, long lines at stores, long breaks from school, girlfriend’s that 撒娇over engagement rings…. I think you get the idea. The phrase “this the season” is basically saying, it’s the season for whatever you are talking about. Anything that has to do with Christmas. Now, you could say this in a regular, more positive context. Like if I ask you if you want to make Christmas cookies with me, you might reply, “Sure! Tis the season!” Or when you’re stuck in traffic for hours because everyone is rushing home for the holiday you may sarcastically say, “Ah, this the season!”
