(life window) explaining your dietary choices
several previously unknown dietary choices have entered mainstream society – vegan, vegetarian, paleo, ph, and raw food, for example, but still take a little finesse when being explained to those who are unfamiliar with them. rather than come across as preachy or judgmental, there are several ways to deal with people when confronted with questions regarding your choice.
first, rather than being defensive, simply state that your diet works for you and you feel good about it. no one can argue your personal experiences, and keeping it personal makes others feel less judged or apprehensive. choose your words wisely, and only offer an explanation when asked. giving long diatribes about health benefits and scientific studies often seem preachy and can easily lead to arguments based on merits and morality. focus on your personal experiences and how you feel, rather than what others should be doing. don’t push others to be just like you, and respect that people will make changes if and when they are ready, not because you have chosen to.
finally, give examples. if someone is truly interested, you can cook them a meal or give them recipes or blog links to follow up on. by letting them make their own choices, you show respect and openness without judgmental overtones and expectations, allowing the food to speak for itself.
