 (international) east turkestan independence movement stirs fears

(国际) 疆独的恐惧

at the beginning of this month, a horrific attack took place at kunming railway station in which masked attackers stormed the place, randomly hacking and stabbing those waiting in line to buy tickets and boarding their trains. the incident resulted in 29 deaths and 143 injuries, for the station was too crowded at the time, as it was a weekend, and the place could not be evacuated quickly.

中国昆明在本月初发生一起骇人的恐怖攻击事件，数名蒙面歹徒持刀闯入火车站，随机砍杀正要排队购票或搭车的旅客。由於当时正逢週末，车站内十分拥挤，人群在无法顺利逃散的情况下，最后造成29人死亡、143人受伤。

besides the terrorist attack, there have also been a number of large-scale protests in recent years. in particular, a demonstration was held in urumqi on july 5th, 2009, during which nearly 200 people lost their lives after being attacked by the uyghur people. it appears that the hatred between the uyghurs in xinjiang and han chinese is unceasingly intensifying.

除了本次的恐怖攻击外，过去这几年也都曾发生几次有规模的示威或抗议行动。尤其是2009年7月5日在乌鲁木齐，更有近200位民眾在示威活动中，意外遭到维吾尔族人攻击而丧生。新疆维吾尔族与汉民族间的仇恨，似乎不断在加速扩大。

in light of the uyghur people’s long desire for independence and encouragement and support from islamic activist groups, it is likely that even larger terrorist attacks will be launched in the future. finding a way to defuse the crisis over xinjiang independence will probably be china’s toughest challenge this century.

由於新疆维吾尔族人长期都有建国的独立思想，再加上受到伊斯兰激进组织的鼓舞与支援，后续恐怕会再发动更大规模的恐怖攻击事件。如何有效化解新疆的独立危机，恐怕将是中国本世纪中最难解的难题。
