airpnp, a new cell phone app that offers a ‘legal alternative’ to urinating in public, is currently being tested at this year’s mardis gras festival.

the app, based on the airbnb service that rents out personal property to travelers, allows users to find people who are willing to rent out their toilet facilities for minimal fees. these entrepreneurs must add details regarding cleanliness and toilet paper thickness, and are graded by users who can rate their “pee experience.”

new orleans’ mardis gras – a yearly festival that began in 1837 – is the perfect place to launch such an app, as organizers state public restrooms don’t meet the needs of crowds and attendees. despite facing punishment that includes a weekend stay in orleans parish prison, thousands of people publicly urinate during the festival because they cannot find toilets.
