when everyone in society is poor, even children from the poorest families have a shot at making a name for themselves. however, when the wealth gap in society is too wide, the poorer the children are, the bleaker their future is.

当一个社会是均贫的时候，再穷的小孩都有机会出头天。但是当一个社会贫富差距过大之时，越穷的小孩，人生就越来越没有希望。

take da’an district and xinyi district as an example. on average, one out of every 14 high school students from the districts will be able to gain admission to either national taiwan university, national tsing hua university or national chiao tung university. furthermore, there are not only libraries, cram schools and bookstores in these districts, mrt stations are also in close proximity. what is more, compared to other regions in the country, taipei city receives the most government funding for education. while growing up, children from rich families can concentrate on their studies without having to work to help their families make ends meet. if they get poor grades at school, their parents can hire tutors or enroll them in cram schools to give them extra guidance. having a financially stable family also benefits children’s physical and mental development.

以大安区和信义区為例，平均每14个高中生，就有一位考上台清交。而两个地区的图书馆、补习班、书局林立，捷运四通八达。台北市的教育预算又是全国之冠。有钱人的小孩在成长过程中，可以不用扛家计专心读书。书唸不好父母还可以找家教或补习班给予辅导。家庭在经济长期安定的情况下，也有助於小孩的身心健全发展。

on the other hand, children who come from poorer families grow up having little access to learning materials. in addition, their parents are usually so weighed down by financial problems that they can no longer place importance on their children’s education. the need to work to pay off debt leaves children with little time and energy to study as many of them have to rush to their workplace or back home to help out with household chores straight after school. on top of that, the advancement of technology has resulted in the receipt of negative messages from society and an overload of temptations. all things considered, it seems rather unreasonable to expect poor children to not only stay on the right track, but also be optimistic about their future.

反观穷人家的小孩，从小就教育资源匱乏。加上家中的经济重担往往早就压垮父母的教育责任感。小孩唸书还得背负贷款，许多学生一下课就忙著打工或帮忙家务，实在没什麼时间跟体力唸书。再加上现在网际网路十分发达，社会的负面讯息与诱惑太多。要贫穷的小孩还能把持自己不跟著沉沦，同时还要对未来保持希望，这样的期许，也太為难他们了，不是吗？
